A fair till in front of a squeezed idea
Starlight Princess has one idea, the multiplier symbol, and it squeezes that idea from both ends. The regular paytable gives a multiplier very little to multiply, the 5000x round cap takes away what the top of the ladder could do with the rest, and Free Spins add a rule that leaves their running total idle on any winning spin without a new multiplier. What keeps the game out of the weak band is price. The standard bet, the Ante Bet and the 100x buy all return 96.50%, so neither paid route into the round costs anything in return. A fair price for a squeezed feature is what I mean by competent, and the 6.6 sits exactly there.
The format is shared ground. Sweet Bonanza shares its base: 8 or more matching symbols paying anywhere on the grid, and a tumble after every win. Gates of Olympus goes further and shares the multiplier design as well, the same pay-anywhere tumble grid with multiplier symbols that add up in the base game and feed a running total in free spins, and Starlight Princess 1000 carries that engine too. With the concept shared that closely, the case for this game has to be made in its numbers: what the symbols pay, where the cap sits against the ladder, which spins the Free Spins total touches, and what entry costs.
The regular symbols exist to be multiplied
I count five of the nine regular symbols paying no more than the stake for 8 or 9 copies: 1x, 0.8x, 0.5x, 0.4x and 0.25x. At 10 or 11 copies three of them still pay the stake or less. The top symbol needs 12 copies for its 50x, and 12 of the lowest symbol return 2x. On a 30-position grid the best single board of regular symbols tops out at 75x, from 12 or more of the top symbol beside 12 or more of the second, which is 1.5% of the cap. Tumbles have no limit on their number, but 5000x from regular symbols alone is the equivalent of 100 separate 50x top-symbol pays in one chain.
Without a multiplier symbol, the only regular-symbol pays above 10x are 10 or more of the top symbol and 12 or more of the next three. The base-game multiplier is therefore the base game. Its values add when the chain ends, multiply the chain's total win and then leave with the chain. Set the low end of the ladder against the low end of the paytable and the arithmetic stays small: a 2x on 8 of the lowest symbol turns 0.25x into 0.5x, and a 10x makes it 2.5x. Even the 500x rung lifts that same win to only 125x. I read the base game as a delivery system for multiplier symbols with the paytable as the parcel, and the parcel is light.
The cap makes the top of the ladder interchangeable
The ladder runs through 15 values from 2x to 500x, and the cap is 5000x the total bet per round at the standard bet. Dividing the cap by the top three rungs gives the chain win at which a single multiplier symbol stops adding anything:
| Multiplier symbol | Chain win that reaches the cap |
|---|
| 100x | 50x |
| 250x | 20x |
| 500x | 10x |
A 10x chain is nothing exotic. Eight copies of the top symbol pay it, and so do 10 of the second and 12 of the fifth, and with a 500x on screen any of those reaches the cap. On the top symbol's 50x pay, the 100x, 250x and 500x values return the same 5000x. Above the 100x rung, extra value exists only on chains paying under 50x, and the 500x beats the 250x only on chains under 20x. Every single regular pay except the 25x and 50x tiers sits under 20x, so the cap turns the most dramatic values on the ladder into multipliers for small wins.
The Ante Bet changes the headline figure and not the ceiling itself. With it on, the cap reads 4000x the raised stake, and 4000 times 1.25 standard bets is 5000 standard bets, the same cash. Measured against what was actually staked, the ceiling falls by a fifth.
The Free Spins total pays on multiplier spins, not on the round
The round opens with 15 spins, adds 5 for 3 or more scatters, one fewer scatter than the base trigger needs, and runs on its own reel strips. Each multiplier symbol that lands on a winning spin adds its value to a total that starts at zero and does not reset for the rest of the round, retriggers included. That total multiplies a win only on a spin where a new multiplier symbol lands with the win. Take a total of 7 with a 3x and a 6x landing on a 2.5x win: the spin pays 40x and the total moves to 16.
The total is what makes a small symbol count. On the first winning multiplier spin of a round a 2x doubles that win, while on a total of 98 the same 2x lifts it to 100, and the top symbol's 50x pay times 100 is exactly the 5000x cap. The cap then erases the difference between values. On a total of 1000, a 5x win with any new multiplier symbol passes 5000x, so the round's winnings stop at the cap whether the arriving symbol is a 2x or a 500x. Once the total is large enough that the smallest new value already carries a win past the cap, which multiplier lands stops mattering, and only whether one lands with a win does.
The idle rule is where the round leaks. A winning spin with no new multiplier symbol pays face value however high the total stands, and a multiplier symbol on a spin without a win adds nothing to it. A total of 500 does nothing for a 10x tumble win that arrives without a multiplier symbol; the same win with a 2x beside it reaches the cap. That gap, between 10x and 5000x on the same board, is the cost of the rule in one comparison. I count it as the game's second self-inflicted limit after the thin paytable: the round can build a very large number and then apply it only to a narrow class of spins.
Both paid routes into Free Spins keep the full return
The Ante Bet raises the stake by 25% and doubles the natural chance of triggering Free Spins. Per unit staked that is 2 divided by 1.25, or 60% more natural triggers, and the return stays at 96.50%. What it takes away is the 25% on every spin and the buy, which is disabled while it is on; the cash ceiling does not move.
Buy Free Spins costs 100x the total bet for a spin with 4 guaranteed scatter symbols, and that spin starts the same round a natural trigger gives, at the same 96.50%. Because the buy is disabled under the Ante Bet, it always runs under the standard 5000x cap, and 5000x on a 100x price is 50 times the cost. The bought round is the natural round, so the price buys access rather than a better feature, and at an unchanged return that is a fair trade. It cannot lift the ceiling, and the two sections above show how small a win the ladder needs to reach it.
Suited to format loyalists at full return, not to ceiling hunters
Starlight Princess makes sense for someone who already likes the pay-anywhere multiplier format, wants every route into it priced at 96.50%, and accepts 5000x the standard bet as the most any round can pay. It makes less sense for anyone who wants regular symbols to matter in the base game, since five of the nine pay the stake or less on their smallest tier, and for anyone drawn mainly to the Free Spins total, since it touches only spins that land a multiplier with a win. Those two limits and the cap are why fair pricing lifts this game to a competent 6.6 and no further.
