Base-game multipliers and the new Epic Drop

Chaos Crew 2 keeps Cranky Cat's multiplying Wild and adds a random base-game event that sends multiplier symbols straight to the grid.

19 paylines

Cranky Cat Wild

  1. 1

Wins are evaluated on 19 paylines across the 5 × 5 grid.

  2. 2

A Cranky Cat acts as a Wild and carries a multiplier from 2x to 20x.

  3. 3

When several Cats share one winning payline, their values multiply one another.

Random base-game event

Epic Drop

  1. 1

Epic Drop can activate at random during the base game.

  2. 2

At least five multiplier symbols are dropped onto the reels.

  3. 3

Their values are revealed and resolved before play returns to the base game.

This event is a direct multiplier injection, not the same thing as entering the full Bonus or Super Bonus.

Bonus versus Super Bonus

Three and four scatters lead to different opening states, while both rounds build reel values with Cranky and Sketchy variants.

3

Bonus

Starts with three refilling lives. Regular, Sticky, Epic and Epic Sticky versions of Cranky Cat and Sketchy Skull can land; the final reel values are summed and applied to the stake.

Super Bonus

Begins with an Epic Drop that guarantees at least seven multiplier symbols, then continues under the Bonus rules.

Best of Bonus is three complete attempts

It changes the selection rule, not the mechanics inside a single Bonus or Super Bonus attempt.

What is distinctive about Chaos Crew 2

Our verdict on the maths, and where the game falls short

What matters here

  • Chaos Crew 2 has 5/5 volatility and a 20,000× maximum win.
  • Three scatters open Bonus.
  • Four scatters open Super Bonus with an opening Epic Drop of at least seven multiplier symbols.
  • BonusHunt FeatureSpins cost 5× the bet and make a bonus trigger ten times more likely on each spin.

Limitations

  • Casinos can run this game at four return settings from 96.27% down to 88.28%, so the rules screen is worth checking before playing.
  • Super Bonus changes only the opening Epic Drop and then follows the regular Bonus rules, so a fourth scatter buys one stronger spin rather than a different round.
  • A Cranky Cat multiplier applies only to a winning payline the Cat sits on, so a 20× Cat outside any win adds nothing.

Editorial conclusion

6.8/ 10our score for this game

Cranky Cat is the real idea here because Cats sharing a winning payline multiply one another. Two 20× Cats on one line turn that win into 400 times its value. The frame around that wild is thin because Super Bonus is only the regular Bonus with a stronger opening Epic Drop. A return floor of 88.28% and that repetitive bonus ladder hold a good wild back to a competent score.

Chaos Crew 2 is a good compounding wild inside a bonus menu that keeps repeating one round

A sequel that builds routes into one round, not a second idea

The idea that carries Chaos Crew 2 is the Cranky Cat, a wild with a multiplier between 2× and 20× that multiplies with every other Cat on the same winning payline, in the base game and the bonus alike. The rest of the design is routing around a single destination. Three scatters open the regular Bonus. Epic Drop puts one instant bonus-round spin with at least five multiplier symbols into the base game. Super Bonus is the regular round with a stronger opening Epic Drop, Best of Bonus plays the chosen round three times and keeps the best, and BonusHunt FeatureSpins make a bonus ten times as likely per spin. My argument is that Chaos Crew 2 is a good wild in a thin frame, and that the frame cannot lift the wild's ceiling, because three 20× Cats reach the 20,000× cap on any line worth 2.5× the bet or more.

This is the second game in the Chaos Crew series, and a sequel earns its number by what it builds. What this one builds is access: more ways to reach the same round, more copies of it, and a better first spin. That is a menu rather than a mechanism, and it is why I score the game as competent rather than good. The four return settings, from 96.27% down to 88.28%, decide more about its value than any of the doors into the Bonus.

Three 20× Cats reach the cap on any line worth 2.5× the bet

Compounding is what separates the Cat from a plain multiplier wild. Two Cats at the bottom of the range turn a line win into four times its value; two at the top turn it into 400 times, a hundredfold spread from the same pair of symbols. A third 20× Cat on that line lifts the multiplier to 8,000×, and a line worth 2.5× the bet then reaches 20,000×, the most the game pays. A fourth would make 160,000×, eight times the cap, so any line worth more than one-eighth of the bet ends at 20,000× instead of paying past it.

The ceiling therefore belongs to the cap, not to the Cat. The multipliers alone can reach the 20,000× figure: three 20× Cats meet it on any line worth 2.5× the bet or more. The consequence runs the other way on the spins where no Cat touches a paying line. A 20× Cat outside any win adds nothing, because its multiplier applies to a winning payline the Cat is part of. Volatility of 5 out of 5 and a hundredfold gap between a low pair and a high pair point the same way: the return sits in rare alignments of high Cats on winning lines, and the spins without them are what those alignments cost.

Super Bonus is one better spin, not a better round

Laid flat, the ladder is short. A random Epic Drop in the base game guarantees at least five multiplier symbols on one spin and then returns to base play. Three scatters open the Bonus. Four open Super Bonus, whose opening Epic Drop guarantees at least seven, after which the round follows the regular Bonus rules. Against the base-game Epic Drop, the fourth scatter lifts the guarantee from five multiplier symbols to seven. Against the regular Bonus, it adds that one opening spin and nothing after it.

I count this as the weakest step in the design. The name promises a different round, and the rules deliver the same round with a stronger start. The guarantee is also a count of symbols rather than a minimum win, so the extra two symbols say how crowded the opening board is, not what it pays. A four-scatter trigger deserves a round of its own, and here it gets a better first spin.

Best of Bonus trims the floor and leaves the ceiling where it was

Best of Bonus plays three complete rounds of the chosen bonus, Bonus or Super Bonus, and awards the best of the three. Two bounds follow from that rule alone. The payout is never below what any one of the three rounds made, and never above the three added together. Its worth therefore sits between one round and three, and the two rounds it discards are complete rounds whose wins are thrown away.

It cannot raise the ceiling either. A best-of-three pays one round, so it stops at 20,000× like any single round, and what three attempts improve is the chance of a strong round, not the size of the strongest one. What the option gives is protection from a round that ends thin, which is a reasonable thing to want on a 5-out-of-5 game. It is also more of the same round: three plays of one Bonus, sorted.

FeatureSpins halve the cost of a trigger and divide the best case by five

BonusHunt FeatureSpins cost 5× the bet per spin and make a bonus game ten times as likely on each spin. The trigger arithmetic is short. The stake spent per trigger is the cost of a spin divided by the chance that it triggers, so five times the cost against ten times the chance halves the stake per bonus. On that measure the price is generous.

The bill arrives against the ceiling. The 20,000× cap is a multiple of the bet, so a FeatureSpin can return at most 4,000 times its own cost, against 20,000 times for a normal spin. Buying them trades a best case five times smaller, measured against spend, for twice the triggers per unit of stake. Because Super Bonus follows the regular rules after its opener, those extra triggers deliver more of one round rather than more variety, which is the thin frame showing up inside a purchase that is otherwise well priced.

The return setting matters more than the fourth scatter

Casinos can run this game at four return settings: 96.27%, 94.22%, 92.41% and 88.28%. At the top setting the house edge is 3.73% of stake. At the bottom it is 11.72%, more than three times as much, and the gap between the two is 7.99 points of return. I weigh that above any choice on the bonus menu, because the setting decides how much of every stake the game keeps, while a fourth scatter decides one spin. The rules screen is worth checking before anything else.

The game suits a player who wants a maximum-volatility payline slot built on one multiplying wild, at 96.27%, and who accepts that the menu offers frequency and insurance rather than new rounds. A player after three features that play differently should look elsewhere, since Super Bonus, Best of Bonus and the FeatureSpins all lead back to the regular Bonus rules. At 88.28% I would pass on it, because a good wild does not carry an edge of 11.72%. A good Cat, a repetitive ladder and a low return floor add up to competent, and competent is where I score it.

Pros

  • Cats on one winning line multiply one another, so two 20× Cats make a 400× line
  • Three 20× Cats reach the 20,000× cap on any line worth 2.5× the bet or more
  • FeatureSpins cost 5× the bet for ten times the trigger chance, halving the stake per bonus
  • Best of Bonus keeps the best of three complete rounds, which protects against a thin round
  • A top return setting of 96.27%

Cons

  • Super Bonus is the regular Bonus with one stronger opening spin, not a different round
  • Return settings run down to 88.28%, an edge more than three times that of the 96.27% build
  • A Cranky Cat outside a winning line adds nothing, however high its multiplier
  • FeatureSpins cap the best case at 4,000 times their own cost
  • Best of Bonus cannot raise the 20,000× ceiling and throws away two complete rounds

Verdict

The Cranky Cat's compounding is a good idea, and three 20× Cats on one line can reach the 20,000× cap. A bonus ladder that repeats one round and a return floor of 88.28% hold the game to competent.
